Dreams- A work out of our psyche

By Healing Touch

I must say, one of my favorite classes and teachings in my masters of counseling psychology program, was dream psychology and dream interpretation. Dreams, in analytical psychology, can provide very valuable information about our psyche, both, our waking and nocturnal life. I have come to not only rely on my dreams, but trust the process of unraveling my dreams to try and understand what is at the core. How can I then, make it applicable to my daily life? That is the question. " It is on the whole probably that we continually dream, but that consciousness makes such a noise that we do not hear it." Carl Jung

Carl Jung, Swiss psychologist, teaches that dreams can be both, of this world, (our physical reality), or about the other world,(The veil, the other side, heaven, parallel universe, or the collective unconscious.)The term" Collective Unconscious" is studied in analytical psychology. The" collective unconscious" depicts the highly personal functions like the nervous system that all human kind shares and the more deep unconscious circle of consciousness that is present in archetypes. We can use the example of the mother archetype. It is a strong, deep collective understanding deeply woven in all human kind. Dreams are one way of understanding not only the here and now, the physical reasons for dreams, but also the deeper more collective reason for why we dream and what we can learn.

I remember as I was studying Carl Jung and dream interpretation, I had a very surreal dream. I was walking in a cemetery. There was a lot of white marble, cement, pillars, it was bright. I knew I was in a cemetery, but it felt more like I was back in ancient Rome. I looked down as I strolled across the green grass. I gasped in disbelief and utter terror. I saw Jan Fadell, my ex boyfriends mom's name on the grave stone. I looked over, and their next to it was Billy's gravestone, Billy was my first love. He and I were soul mates. Jan was like a mother to me as Billy and I had dated on and off from high school into my college career and thereafter. This dream shook me to my core. I wanted to pawn it off as " just a dream", but deep in my heart, I knew this was what Carl Jung called " A Big Dream". A big dream can be assessed when the dreamer feels it was so real. It has a deep, throbbing emotional aftermath. I knew this was one of them.

One year later My dream became a reality. My ex boyfriend was killed by lightening, and his mother whom I had dreamt of in that cold white cemetery, was taken by cancer. I loved them so much.

You may ask me if this dream somehow helped me or hurt me. Why would I dream this and then watch it unfold before my eyes, in this lifetime, just one year later? I can look back now and understand that some deep part of me that dreamt this, helped prepare me for one of the hardest experiences of my life. Dreams do balance out our psyche and help us to work out issues in our psyche. The unconscious and conscious need to balance out.

Wow pretty amazing dream. I have never heard of the "big dream" I can't even imagine having something this devastating become real.

I'm sorry for you loss. This redefines the meaning of surreal. Great job on this hub. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Healing Touch.

I have never researched the meaning of dreams and to be honest I don't think I ever will. However that doesn't mean that I don't believe in them at all. I just think that I am coping better without having them analyzed.

Your hub is very interesting and I'm going to bookmark it to show my partner Dai. He is very interested in issues like this.

Thank you so much for sharing

Take care and God Bless Healing Touch.

Nearly forgot to say thank you for the video clip.

Hi Healing Touch/Sis-I love this hub on dreams. We both are quite vivid dreamers and many have had such symbolic meaning too. I love the video you put on to go with this magical, mystery tour called your hub. :)

So many dreams, and why do we dream them?? What do they mean? I have asked myself this many times. Thank you for sharing!

I love Carl Jung’s theories! There was a time in my life I frequently had BIG dreams. This inspired me to study Jung’s and theories of others regarding dreams and the interpretation thereof. I guess I should hub some of my dreams. I came under the impression that those big dreams, that ‘predictions’ of future happenings.... no, this will take much too long – it is such and interesting topic! Let me just say I was thankful for those dreams. It was sort of the rehearsals... prepared me for a coming shock... warned me.... gave me some guidelines... Strange but true! Thanks for hubbing this interesting topic!

MartieCoetser,

I think it is great you studied Jung. Your right, there is so much to learn of dreams with Jung. My big dreams are so a preparation for me.

What a sad story... You are right dreams do help us to cope with things. I know for myself they have helped me a lot, I would not have made it through these last 2 years without them.

Thanks for sharing!

I have a lot of dreams, big and small. One of the most unforgettable was after my best friend died when we were in college, I was devastated and after a time, she came to me in a dream and told me that it's really not that bad and for me to relax. She was a psychology student going into her master's program @ UNLV. To this day, I still miss her. But the dream was of great comfort to me.

I love this hub and wish you would write more about the Jungian psychology of dreams. This is fascinating stuff!

I feel happy for you that your best friend from college came to you in a dream. I have had that happen many times now in my life, but you have to be open to it. I am glad you felt comforted by the dream. Thanks for stopping

I've had a number of "Big Dreams", one of which I wrote a hub about, "Living The Dream". It's about me having a vivid dream that exactly foretold the next day's waking reality, and directed me to find a ring that had been lost for over 2 years.

I am a big believer in dreams of premonition and those that reveal what we may have overlooked or denied while awake.

This was a good hub and I will be reading more of your work.

I found this totally fascinating. I very rarely remember my dreams but I feel sure that the dreams definitely do mean something. I simply loved the Michael Buble utube - very appropriate.

Very nice hub! I had several important dreams, amongst whom future telling dreams, that came true later on, myself.

So, I really know out of experience you are on the right track here. But it goes even beyond that what you write, I think. Looking forward for more hubs like this.

Great hub, nice to have people think of dreams more as an educational lesson to learn rather then just something to have get therapy for. This sends a more positive message.

According to Jung, I must have "big" dreams quite a bit. My Leather Journal is almost full from all the dreams I've written down in 2 years! In my belief system, I do believe that my "visions and dreams" are something that is a gift from God. Many times when I've been prayed for, others have told me that I have this "gift". I feel blessed at any rate to have it...and I don't take them very lightly.

Great article Laura, thanks so much for sharing!! Cheers, Jenn.

Healing Touch this is a wonderful hub and about something very dear to my heart. Dreams have played a very important part in my professional and personal life and what you have written here is a very powerful and accurate representation of what we spend a large part of our lives doing. I too have had a few "big dreams" in my life and I have written about them too. fascinating stuff isn't it?

Thank you. Voted up and all buttons pressed (except funny).

What an awesome hub and a fascinating subject. I think if we could all understand just a little more about our dreams and our sub-consconcious world, I honestly think the world would not only be a more content place but a much happier and relaxed one.

I loved this fascinating insight into our deep mind especially as it's not an easy subject to tackle.
